The XJ-2 is a versatile, amazingly quiet HEPA air cleaning unit for use in airborne infection isolation rooms (AIIR), hospital isolation rooms, medical settings, and in hospital infection control applications. Utilizing a dynamically balanced motorized impeller, the XJ-2 air purification system runs smoothly and is infinitely adjustable with minimal noise. Easily configured for use as a negative or positive pressure unit, or for recirculation, the XJ-2 commercial air purifier quickly installs to any standard wall or can be used with its standard roll around base. Its TRUE HEPA filtration provides the maximum available air filtration available for hospital isolation rooms and infection control. The XJ-2 provides the most cost effective solution for hospital air purifiers. Hospitals value the extra options available with the XJ-2 such as recirculation plenum, wall mounting kit and tamper resistant security cover.

Configuration of the Unit: Negative Air vs Recirculation:

Negative Pressure Upflow Choice: Opting for this selection involves the inclusion of the Window Exhaust Kit, which enables the air emitted by the XJ-2 to be directed outside or into another room. This configuration establishes an environment characterized by negative pressure. The package encompasses the ducted plenum alongside a 6" diameter exhaust hose that can extend up to 8 feet.

Recirculation Alternative: In situations where the creation of negative pressure isn't viable due to structural limitations, the utilization of the recirculating plenum transforms the XJ-2 into a self-contained medical-grade HEPA air purifier. This adaptation aligns with the CDC Guidelines for interior rooms. This alternative becomes available when there is no necessity for air exhaust (negative pressure).

For air purification, the XJ-2 is a quiet medical-grade room HEPA air cleaner that is suitable for airborne infection isolation rooms (AIIR), hospitals, medical facilities, extended-care facilities, nursing homes and institutional use. This portable unit is also a great unit for asthma patient rooms. The XJ-2 air filtration system is independently lab tested and certified as a whole air cleaner to a minimum of 99.97% efficiency. This is especially important as simply installing a HEPA air filter into an air cleaner cabinet can not guarantee HEPA performance as penetrations into the air cleaner cabinet, leaks around doors and the integrity of the HEPA seal itself must all be taken into consideration and tested to guarantee performance. Replacement filters and parts for the XJ-2 are also available. Make sure to ask whether the air cleaner was HEPA tested as a whole before purchasing!

The XJ-2 Negative Pressure HEPA unit provides isolation capability in urgent circumstances. This highly portable self-contained model is designed to minimize floor space utilization, be adaptable to other enhanced air filtration needs with the optional recirculation plenum and can be utilized in special positive pressure applications. The adaptable XJ-2, is a rugged functional workhorse, providing the essential airflow and pressure differential needed for tough duty. The XJ-2 with its HEPA filtration, most commonly recommended by health authorities, is an excellent candidate for healthcare, office, and school applications.

Looking for more information on AIIRs? ASHRAE standard 170-2021 goes into detail about ventilation in healthcare facilities. This online document can be accessed at techstreet.com and includes the following:

“Information about Airborne Infection Isolation Rooms (AIIRs):

AIIRs are single-patient rooms at negative pressure relative to the surrounding areas, and with a minimum of 6 air changes per hour (12 air changes per hour are recommended for new construction or renovation).
Air from these rooms should be exhausted directly to the outside or be filtered through a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter directly before recirculation.
Room doors should be kept closed except when entering or leaving the room, and entry and exit should be minimized.
Facilities should monitor and document the proper negative-pressure function of these rooms.”

History of the XJ-2

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Air Quality Engineering received urgent calls from hospitals all around the country for our medical-grade XJ-2 HEPA Air Cleaner. This system was developed to create negative pressure isolation rooms for the rising number of tuberculosis (TB) patients in the late ’80s and early ’90s. As public health measures improved the TB problem, demand for this equipment diminished – until now. Read on to learn more about the inception and history of the XJ-2 HEPA Air Cleaner.

Demand for Negative Pressure Isolation Rooms: Emergence of Multidrug-Resistant Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis has been around for centuries, and that it’s transmitted via airborne pathways was demonstrated by the early 1900s. Development of antibiotics in the 1950s led to a 30-year decrease in incidence, but complex social and scientific factors led to an 18 percent increase from around 1985 to 1995. More alarming was the emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) infections.

MDR-TB infections are resistant to primary TB drugs. Caring for infected patients and minimizing the risk of transmission required placement in a negative pressure isolation room, now known as an airborne infection isolation room (AIIR). Negative pressure in the room means air will flow in but not out. AIIRs also require direct exhaust of air from inside the room through a HEPA filter to remove the infectious particles.

A Strategic Solution: Inception and Development of the XJ-2 HEPA Air Cleaner

A practicing physician at the time, Dr. Thomas Oas, M.D., M.P.H, studied the situation. He became certified in public health and preventive medicine and wrote his master’s project on environmental controls for prevention of TB.

Dr. Oas collaborated with his wife, Heidi Oas, then president and current CEO of AQE, to develop an air handling unit that easily and efficiently creates negative pressure for TB isolation rooms: the XJ-2. Hospitals around the nation turned to AQE at the time for this versatile, highly effective, HEPA-filtered air purification system.

In the ensuing years, the need for such equipment decreased significantly, leading nearly all original manufacturers to drop them from production. However, we kept the XJ-2 hospital grade unit in our system for applications such as medical facilities, extended and senior care facilities, and institutional use, as well as preparation for another public health concern like the emergence of MDR-TB.

The XJ-2 quickly and easily converts ordinary patient care rooms into AIIRs and complies with the “Interim Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations for Patients with Suspected or Confirmed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Healthcare Settings” published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
